Ethel Brill’s Madeleine Takes Command tells the compelling true story of teenage Madeline de Vercheres. Madeleine de Vercheres is the oldest child of a rather titled family living in New France which we now call Canada. Her Father is away on business leaving her Mother in charge of the log fort that houses the seigneury. When her Mother must attend to business in the city, she leaves Madeliene in charge thinking, “What could wrong in a few weeks.” Just a few days later, however, the seigneury is attacked by the Iroquois Indians. Now Madeleine must protect the fort with her small force consisting of herself a fourteen-year-old girl as the commander, her ten and twelve-year-old brothers, Louis and Sandre as her Leutentits, three soldiers, and a man who is well into his 80s, against the fearsome Iroquois Indians. Can help possibly arrive in time, or will Madeline and her little force be destroyed?
